ASCA 2020 School Council Award of Merit - Stavely School Council
The School Council Award of Merit recognizes effective school council practices that have had an identifiable impact on supporting student learning and school improvement at the school level, the district level or provincial level.
I believe I have demonstrated achievement of this competency by:
- working with University of Lethbridge professor, Dr. Kevin Wood, to develop a mission statement for our school that aligns with current education philosophies, staff and student cultural beliefs and our learning culture;
- modelling life-long learning by attending professional development opportunities in leadership, pedagogy, assessment and mental health areas;
- embedding socio-emotional wellness/learning with our FSL proactively in all classes. Our one-on-one counselling has dropped by approximately 75% because of this proactive measure;
- being on the planning committee for Admin Retreat 2018;
- providing professional development boosters weekly to Stavely School Staff in the WAAG;
- providing professional development sharing time during staff meetings;
- providing opportunities for teaching, support and admin assistant staff to attend pertinent professional development as outlined in their professional growth plans;

- GRIT - transition program for Grade 6 students which encourages students to develop resilience through hard work, planning, determination, development of study habits;

Philosophy of Education and Children Full of Life
As important as it is to be forward thinking, I believe that is is imperative to ground our curriculum in care. We cannot move forward, provide context for critical and creative thinking allowing our students to emerge themselves into discursive currere without a safe and caring environment. Children Full of Life is a wonderful documentary outlining the importance of care curriculum to help develop our engaged and ethical students. I believe this framework allows education to move into a responsive mode for addressing the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
